Every Google Business Profile mistake your business makes is costing you customers — silently, and at scale. The Map Pack shows three results. Everything below position three is largely invisible to the customers who matter most: the ones actively searching for what you sell, right now, in your area.

Get Your Free Audit →Mistake 1 — Wrong or Missing Primary Category
Your primary category is the most important single ranking decision on your profile. It determines which searches you are eligible to appear in. Most businesses choose something too broad — "Business" instead of "Solicitor", or "Shop" instead of "Electronics Store". Check your top-ranking competitors and match or improve on their category specificity.
Mistake 2 — Keyword Stuffing in the Business Name
Adding keywords to your Google Business name — "Joe's Plumbing | Best Plumber Lagos Emergency 24hr" — violates Google's guidelines and can get your profile suspended. Your business name field should contain only your legal or trading name. Keywords belong in your description, services, and posts — not your name.
Mistake 3 — Ignoring the Q&A Section
An empty Q&A section is a missed ranking opportunity — and a risk. Anyone can post questions and anyone can answer them, including competitors. Proactively populate yours with your most common customer questions and keyword-rich answers. This adds relevance signals and feeds directly into Google AI Overviews for local queries. Full strategy in our GBP Q&A guide.
Mistake 4 — Not Responding to Reviews
Review response rate is a confirmed Google ranking signal. A business that never responds to reviews signals low engagement to Google's algorithm. Respond to every review within 24 hours. The complete system and templates are in our Google Business Profile Review Strategy guide.
Mistake 5 — Inconsistent NAP Data
If your business name, address, or phone number differs between your GBP, your website, your Facebook page, and your directory listings — even by a comma or abbreviation — Google reads these as inconsistencies that reduce your prominence score. Audit every listing annually. Our complete guide to Google Business Profile optimisation covers the full NAP audit process.
Mistake 6 — No Posting Strategy
Google Posts are a weekly activity signal. Businesses that post regularly demonstrate to Google that they are active and engaged. Aim for at least one post per week with a clear call to action. This takes 10 minutes per week and compounds over months into a meaningful ranking signal. Learn more: How Google Ranks the Map Pack.
Mistake 7 — Confusing GMB Optimisation with Local SEO
Your Google Business Profile and your website local SEO are different systems that serve different ranking surfaces. Optimising one does not automatically optimise the other. Read our breakdown: GMB optimisation vs local SEO.
