How to Access Your GBP Insights
Log in to business.google.com and click "Performance" in the left sidebar. Google rebranded "Insights" to "Performance" in recent updates — same data, new name. You can view up to 6 months of historical data. For your monthly review, always set the date range to the last complete calendar month so you're comparing full periods.
You can also access performance data from the Google Maps app on your phone: tap your profile photo, go to "Your Business Profiles," select your business, and tap "Promote" then "Performance."
The 6 Key Metrics Explained
1. Discovery Searches vs Direct Searches
Discovery searches happen when someone searches a category or service — like "restaurant Lekki" or "plumber near me" — and your listing appeared. This is your local SEO reach metric. Growing discovery searches means your optimisation is working and new customers are finding you.
Direct searches happen when someone searches your exact business name or address. This measures brand awareness — people who already know you exist.
For business growth, Discovery is the more important number. If it's flat after 60 days of optimisation work, your category selection, business description, or services listings need attention.
2. Website Clicks
How many customers clicked through to your website from your listing. This should trend upward every month as your ranking and profile quality improve. If impressions are high but clicks are low, your listing is visible but not compelling — the fix is usually better photos, stronger reviews, or a more specific business description.
3. Phone Calls
Calls made directly via the click-to-call button in your listing. Important caveat: this only counts customers who used the GBP button — not those who copied your number and dialled manually. Your actual call volume attributable to Google is always higher than this figure. Use it as a trend indicator, not an absolute count.
4. Direction Requests
How many people asked Google Maps for directions to your location. One of the clearest signals that your GMB is driving real-world foot traffic. The location breakdown within this metric shows which parts of Lagos your customers are travelling from — useful intelligence for targeting your content and confirming whether your service area configuration is correct.
5. Photo Views vs Competitor Median
Google compares how many times your photos were viewed against the median view count for similar businesses in your category and area. If you're consistently below the competitor median, your photos need urgent attention — this metric directly predicts click-through rates from the Local Pack. Businesses with compelling, frequently updated photos get meaningfully more clicks than those with stale or sparse imagery.
6. Search Queries
The actual search terms that triggered your listing to appear. This is the most strategically valuable data in the entire Insights dashboard and one that most Lagos business owners never look at. See the next section for how to use it.
Using Search Query Data to Find New Keywords
Your Search Queries report shows the real words Lagos customers are typing to find your type of business. Review it monthly and ask three questions:
What unexpected keywords are appearing? If "corporate event catering Lagos" keeps appearing for a restaurant that mainly markets itself as a dine-in venue, that's a signal there's demand you're not explicitly targeting. Create a dedicated service listing, a blog post, or a landing page around it.
Which queries have high impressions but low click-through? If your listing appears 500 times for a keyword but customers rarely click, your listing isn't matching what they expected to see. Improve your description, photos, or review count for that specific service type.
What terminology do customers use that differs from yours? You might call your service "brand photography" but your customers search "product photographer Lagos." The query data shows you the gap — close it in your descriptions and services section.
Performance Benchmarks for Lagos Businesses
These benchmarks apply to established businesses in medium-competition Lagos categories. New profiles or niche industries will have lower baseline numbers that are still healthy for their context.
Your Monthly Review Process (15 Minutes)
Run through this on the first Monday of every month:
- Compare month on month — Are impressions, clicks, calls, and direction requests trending up or down?
- Review search queries — Any new terms? Any surprises worth acting on?
- Check photo metrics — Are you above or below the competitor median?
- Check the call time heatmap — Are peak call hours aligned with your staffing?
- Identify one action item — Based on the data, what is the single most impactful thing to change this month?
Record your monthly numbers in a simple spreadsheet. After six months, the trend line tells you far more than any single month in isolation — it shows whether your optimisation is compounding.
Red Flags to Watch For
- Sudden drop in impressions — Could indicate a ranking drop, an algorithm change, or a suspension. Investigate immediately and check that your listing still appears in an incognito search.
- High impressions, near-zero actions — Your listing is visible but not converting. Review your photos, reviews, and hours accuracy.
- Photo views consistently below the competitor median — Predicts weak click-through rates from the Pack. Schedule a photo upload this week.
- Zero calls despite healthy impressions — Verify your phone number is correctly entered. Call it yourself to confirm.
- Direction requests from unexpected locations — Could mean your service area is misconfigured or a duplicate listing exists elsewhere showing the wrong address.

How accurate is GBP Insights data for Nigerian businesses?
Directionally accurate but not perfectly precise — Google samples some metrics rather than counting every single interaction. Use it for trend analysis and relative performance comparison rather than as an absolute revenue attribution tool.
Why are my GBP call numbers much lower than my actual call volume?
GBP only counts calls made using the click-to-call button in your listing. Customers who copy your number and dial manually, or who find it on your website or social media, are not counted. Your actual call volume from Google is always higher than GBP reports — treat the figure as a conservative floor, not a ceiling.
What does it mean if I get many direct searches but few discovery searches?
People who already know you can find you, but you're not being discovered by new customers. This is a local SEO signal — invest more in category optimisation, reviews, and Lagos-specific content to grow your discovery search visibility and reach customers who don't yet know your business exists.
How long until profile changes show up in Insights data?
Allow 3–14 days for profile changes to be indexed and 2–4 weeks before drawing firm conclusions about the impact on metrics. Insights data updates on roughly a weekly basis — avoid making rapid successive changes and then trying to isolate what worked.
Can I export GBP Insights data to a spreadsheet?
Yes — look for a download or export option in the Performance section of your GBP dashboard. Export to CSV for your own month-on-month trend tracking. Building a simple 12-month tracking spreadsheet is one of the highest-value habits a Lagos business owner can develop for their online presence.
My impressions dropped 40% last month but I didn't change anything. What happened?
Possible causes: a Google local algorithm update, a competitor making significant improvements, a change in how Google is displaying results for your category, or an issue with your listing (check for a soft suspension). Start by verifying your listing is still visible in an incognito Maps search, then look at whether the drop was across all queries or specific ones. Contact Purple Crib Studios for a rapid diagnostic if needed.
