The Google Local 3-Pack — the three businesses that appear at the top of Google Maps results for any local search — is the most valuable real estate in Nigerian local search. Businesses in the 3-Pack receive the majority of clicks and calls for their search terms. Getting there requires a specific, systematic approach. What Is the Google Local 3-Pack?
When someone in Nigeria types a local search query into Google — "dentist in Abuja," "restaurant Lekki," "electrician near me" — the results page typically shows a prominent section at the top featuring a map with three pinned businesses. This section is called the Google Local 3-Pack (also called the Local Pack or Map Pack).
Each of the three listings in the Pack shows:
- Business name
- Star rating and review count
- Address and distance from the searcher
- Opening hours status
- A phone number or website link (depending on the query)
- Photos (when uploaded)
These three listings are what every local business in Nigeria should be competing for. Everything below the 3-Pack — organic website listings, paid ads that appear separately — receives significantly less attention and fewer clicks.
Why the Local 3-Pack Matters More Than Anything Else in Nigerian Local Search
The numbers tell the story clearly:
- The Google Local 3-Pack receives 44% of all clicks for local intent search queries
- The first organic result below the Local Pack receives approximately 8–10% of clicks
- Businesses in the 3-Pack receive 5× more calls than those ranking below it
- 92% of searchers who perform a local search on mobile visit a business the same day
For a Lagos restaurant, clinic, salon, or service business, being in the Local 3-Pack is the difference between a consistently busy business and one that struggles to attract new customers — even if the non-3-Pack business is objectively better.
The Local Pack also appears above paid Google Ads in many local search results. This means that a business in the organic Local 3-Pack can outperform competitors who are spending money on Google Ads — for free.
Who Qualifies to Appear in the Local 3-Pack?
To be eligible to appear in the Google Local 3-Pack in Nigeria, your business must:
- Have a verified Google Business Profile — An unverified profile cannot appear in the Pack
- Have a physical location or defined service area in Nigeria — Pure online businesses with no location data are not eligible
- Operate in a category that Google recognises as local — Most legitimate business categories qualify
- Not have a suspended listing — Suspended profiles are invisible to all local search results
If you meet these four criteria, you're eligible. The question then becomes: what optimisation work do you need to do to compete with the businesses that are already in the Pack?
How to Get Into the Google Local 3-Pack in Nigeria
Getting into the 3-Pack requires outscoring your competitors across Google's three ranking pillars: Relevance, Distance, and Prominence. Here is the systematic approach we use at Purple Crib Studios for every Nigerian client.
Stage 1: Fix the Foundations (Week 1)
These are non-negotiables. If any of these are wrong, nothing else matters.
- Verify your profile if it isn't already. Do not proceed until this is complete.
- Check for suspension. Search your business on Google Maps while logged out. If it doesn't appear, check your dashboard for a suspension notice and resolve it immediately.
- Set the correct primary category. This is the highest-single-impact change available to most Nigerian businesses. Choose the most specific category for your primary service.
- Complete every profile field. Business description (all 750 chars), hours, phone, website, attributes, services, and products.
Stage 2: Build Visual Credibility (Week 1–2)
- Upload a minimum of 20 professional photos across all Google photo categories (exterior, interior, team, products/services)
- Upload at least one video — even a 30-second phone video of your premises
- Set a high-quality cover photo that represents your business clearly
Visual credibility matters because it directly influences click-through rates from the Pack. A listing with professional photos gets far more clicks than one with blurry images or none at all — and click-through rate is itself a ranking signal.
Stage 3: Launch Your Review System (Week 2–3)
Reviews are one of the most powerful 3-Pack ranking signals and the area where most Nigerian businesses have the most room to improve quickly.
- Create your direct Google review link from your GBP dashboard
- Send WhatsApp review requests to your last 20 satisfied customers immediately
- Set up QR code review cards for all physical customer touchpoints
- Train staff on the verbal ask at point of service
- Respond to every existing review you haven't responded to yet
Target: 5+ new reviews in the first month. Maintain a cadence of 5–10 review requests per week ongoing.
Stage 4: Establish Citation Authority (Week 3–4)
- Submit your business to all Tier 1 global directories: Bing Places, Apple Maps, Foursquare, Facebook Business
- Submit to the top 11 Nigerian directories: VConnect, ConnectNigeria, BusinessList Nigeria, Naijalocal, and others — see our Nigerian directories guide
- Use identical NAP on every submission — copy-paste, never retype
- Audit your existing citations for inconsistencies and correct them
Stage 5: Activate Your GMB Posting Schedule (Week 2 onwards)
- Publish your first Google Business Post immediately after completing your profile
- Commit to one post per week at minimum, rotating between offer, update, event, and product posts
- Each post should include an original photo and a clear call to action
Stage 6: Optimise Your Website for Local Alignment (Month 1–2)
- Add your full address to your website footer on every page
- Include your Lagos or Nigerian city name in page title tags and H1 headings
- Embed a Google Map on your contact page
- Add LocalBusiness JSON-LD schema markup to your homepage
- Create location-specific service pages for each Lagos area you serve
Stage 7: Build Local Authority with Links and Content (Month 2–4)
For competitive Lagos markets, content and links separate the businesses that maintain top-3 positions from those that hover at positions 4–10.
- Publish Lagos-specific blog content targeting local search queries (minimum 1 post per month)
- Seek backlinks from Nigerian websites — news mentions, association directories, business partnerships
- Build your presence in industry-specific directories relevant to your business type

How to Stay in the Local 3-Pack Once You're There
Getting into the 3-Pack is an achievement. Staying there requires ongoing maintenance because your competitors are continuously working to displace you.
- Keep generating reviews — Review velocity (new reviews per month) matters as much as total volume. Never stop asking.
- Post weekly without exception — A profile that goes silent for a month loses freshness signals quickly.
- Add photos twice a month — Maintain the visual freshness signals that helped you rank.
- Monitor competitors monthly — Check who's in positions 1–3 alongside you. If a competitor is growing their reviews faster, close the gap.
- Update your profile for any business changes — New hours, new services, new phone number. Stale information signals an inactive business.
- Respond to every new review within 48 hours — Engagement consistency is a signal you cannot afford to let slip.
Our ongoing GMB management service in Lagos handles all of this for you — so you stay in the 3-Pack without taking time away from running your business.

Can I appear in the Google Local 3-Pack without a website?
Yes — a website is not a hard requirement for Local Pack eligibility. However, a well-optimised website significantly strengthens your ranking position by providing additional relevance and authority signals. Businesses without websites are at a disadvantage in competitive Lagos markets.
Why do I sometimes see more than 3 results in the Local Pack?
Google occasionally shows expanded Local Pack results (4–5 listings) for specific query types, locations, or on certain devices. The standard is 3. The ranking signals that determine your position in a 3-result Pack are identical to those in an expanded pack.
My business appears in the 3-Pack sometimes but not always. Why?
Local Pack results are dynamic. Your position can vary based on: the searcher's exact location, the time of day, the specific wording of the query, and Google's continuous algorithm updates. A business at the edge of the 3-Pack will appear and disappear as these variables fluctuate. Sustained optimisation stabilises your position over time.
Can I pay Google to appear in the Local 3-Pack?
You cannot buy your way into the organic Local 3-Pack — those positions are earned through optimisation. However, Google offers Local Services Ads (a separate paid product) that appear above the organic Pack for certain service categories in Nigeria. This is a legitimate paid supplement to organic Pack ranking, not a replacement for it.
How do I know if my Local 3-Pack ranking is improving?
Check your Google Business Profile Insights monthly — look at impressions (how often your listing appeared in Maps), direction requests, and calls. All three should trend upward as your ranking improves. You can also manually search your primary keywords in Lagos to see your current Pack position — use an incognito window to get an unbiased result.
