Choosing the right Google Business Profile category is one of the highest-impact optimisation decisions available to Nigerian businesses — and one of the most commonly mishandled. The wrong category means Google shows you for the wrong searches, or doesn't show you at all. This guide covers the best categories for every major Nigerian business type, how to research the right choice for your specific situation, and how to configure secondary categories to maximise your search eligibility.

Why Business Categories Are Your Biggest Ranking Lever

Your primary business category is the single strongest relevance signal in your entire Google Business Profile. It is the first filter Google applies when matching your listing to a search query.

Think of it this way: when someone in Lagos searches "Nigerian restaurant near me," Google starts by looking for all businesses in the area categorised as "Nigerian Restaurant." If you're categorised as simply "Restaurant," you have a weaker relevance match and will rank lower — or not appear at all — for that specific query, even if your profile is otherwise excellent.

In our experience auditing hundreds of Nigerian business profiles, wrong category selection is the single most common fixable ranking problem we find. The correction often produces visible ranking improvements within 2–4 weeks.

How to Choose the Right Primary Category

Follow these three steps to identify your optimal primary category:

Step 1: Define Your Core Service

What is the one thing your business is most known for? Not all your services — just the primary one that represents the majority of your revenue and the most common reason customers visit or contact you.

Step 2: Search for That Category in GBP

Log in to your GBP dashboard, click "Edit Profile," then "Business category." In the category search field, type keywords that describe your core service. Google will suggest matching categories — read through the options carefully and look for the most specific one that accurately describes what you do.

The specificity rule: Always choose the most specific accurate option. "Nigerian Restaurant" beats "Restaurant." "Physiotherapy Clinic" beats "Health." "Corporate Law Firm" beats "Law Firm." Specific categories face less competition and signal higher relevance for targeted searches.

Step 3: Research Your Competitors

Search your primary service in Google Maps in your Lagos area. Click on each of the top 3 businesses in the Local Pack and look for their category — it typically appears in small text below their business name in the listing. If all your top competitors are using "Nigerian Restaurant" and you're using "Restaurant," that gap is directly contributing to your lower ranking.

How to Use Secondary Categories Strategically

GBP allows you to add up to 9 secondary categories in addition to your primary. Each secondary category expands the range of searches you can appear for — making it one of the easiest ways to increase your listing's visibility without any additional content creation.

Key rules for secondary categories:

  • Only add categories that genuinely reflect services you actually provide
  • Do not add aspirational categories for services you don't offer — this mismatches customer expectations and violates Google's guidelines
  • Prioritise specificity in secondaries too — "Wedding Photographer" over just "Photographer"
  • Review your secondary categories every 6 months and update them if your service offering changes

Note: If you don't see your exact business type above, use the GBP category search field to explore all available options. Google has over 4,000 business categories — the right one almost certainly exists for your specific type of business.

How to Change Your Category in GBP

  1. Log in to business.google.com
  2. Click "Edit Profile"
  3. Click "Business category"
  4. To change your primary category, click the current category and type a new one in the search field
  5. To add secondary categories, click "Add another category" below your primary
  6. Click "Save"

Category changes typically take 3–7 days to be reflected in Google's search results. Monitor your GBP Insights over the following 4 weeks to see the impact on discovery impressions — if the new category is more relevant, you should see an uptick.

Caution: Major category changes can occasionally trigger Google to request re-verification of your listing. Be prepared to re-verify if prompted — this is normal and is resolved by completing the verification process again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a category that doesn't perfectly describe my business?

Only if it's the closest accurate option available. Do not use a category that significantly misrepresents your business — this violates Google's guidelines and can result in suspension. If Google has no category that precisely matches your business, choose the closest accurate one and use your business description to provide specifics.

How many secondary categories should I add?

Add as many as genuinely apply — up to the 9 allowed. More accurate secondaries means more search queries you're eligible to appear for. Do not pad the list with categories that don't reflect real services you offer.

Do category changes affect my current reviews?

No. Reviews are attached to your business listing, not to its category. Changing categories does not affect your review count, rating, or individual reviews.

My competitor is using a category I don't qualify for and outranking me. What can I do?

First, verify they're actually using that category — what appears in Maps may not be their primary category. If they are genuinely using an inaccurate category, you can report the listing via "Suggest an edit" on their Maps listing and flag the incorrect category. Focus first on maximising your own accurate category configuration.

Will changing my primary category reset my ranking?

Changing your primary category changes the searches you're competing for. If you change from a broad category to a more specific one, you may initially rank lower for the broader term but significantly higher for the more specific one — and the specific queries typically convert better. Give any category change 4–6 weeks to stabilise before evaluating its impact.
