Mistake 1: Adding Keywords to Your Business Name
How common: Very common — found in approximately 35% of audited Nigerian profiles.
Your Google Business Profile name must match your actual, real-world business name. Yet many Lagos business owners add descriptive keywords — "Lagos Best Plumber," "Ikeja Top Salon," "Victoria Island Premium Law Firm" — to their business name field, hoping to rank better for those terms.
This is a direct violation of Google's Business Profile guidelines and carries two serious risks: (1) Google may suspend your listing entirely, and (2) Google may simply remove the keyword-stuffed portion of your name in its own index, replacing it with just your actual business name anyway — giving you the penalty without the benefit.
The fix: Your business name in GBP must be your exact trading name. If your signage says "Adewale Plumbing Services," that's what your GBP name should say — nothing more. Keywords belong in your business description, services section, and posts — not in your name.
Mistake 2: Using a Generic or Wrong Business Category
How common: Found in approximately 73% of audited profiles.
Category selection is the highest single-impact factor in GMB relevance — and the most commonly mishandled. Businesses select "Restaurant" when "Nigerian Restaurant" exists. "Contractor" when "Building Contractor" is available. "Health" when "Physiotherapy Clinic" is the right option.
A generic category means generic search eligibility. Google uses your category as its primary filter when deciding which businesses to show for a given query.
The fix: Go to your GBP dashboard, click "Edit Profile," then "Business category." Select the most specific category that accurately describes your primary service. Research your top-ranking Lagos competitors to see what categories they use. See our full guide on best GBP categories for Nigerian businesses for a comprehensive category reference.
Mistake 3: Leaving the Business Description Empty or Under-Written
How common: Found in approximately 61% of audited profiles.
Google provides 750 characters in the business description field. The average Nigerian business profile uses fewer than 100. This is 650 characters of free keyword and conversion copy left completely unused.
Your description tells Google what you do and signals relevance for related searches. It also tells potential customers — who are deciding between your listing and competitors — why they should choose you.
The fix: Write a 700–750 character description that includes your primary service keywords, the specific Lagos areas you serve, your unique value proposition, and a soft call to action. See our GMB optimization page for description examples tailored to Lagos businesses.
Mistake 4: No Review Generation System
How common: Found in approximately 78% of audited profiles.
Reviews are one of Google's three primary local ranking factors — yet most Nigerian businesses have no system for generating them. They leave it to chance, hoping satisfied customers will voluntarily leave reviews without being asked. Most don't.
The businesses dominating the Lagos Local Pack almost universally have systematic review generation processes. They ask every satisfied customer, via WhatsApp or in person, with a direct link that removes all friction.
The fix: Create your direct Google review link from your GBP dashboard and send it to every satisfied customer via WhatsApp within 24 hours of service. See our complete guide on getting more Google reviews for Lagos businesses.
Mistake 5: Never Posting on Google Business Profile
How common: Found in approximately 84% of audited profiles — the most common mistake on this list.
Google Business Posts are free. They take 10 minutes to write. They signal active business management to Google's algorithm and give potential customers a reason to engage with your listing. And 84% of Nigerian businesses never use them.
A profile with no recent posts looks, to both Google and customers, like a business that may no longer be operating. Active competitors who post weekly accumulate 52 freshness signals per year that you're leaving unclaimed.
The fix: Publish one Google Business Post per week. Rotate between offer posts, update posts, and product posts. For ideas and templates, see our guide on using Google Business Posts in Lagos.
Mistake 6: Uploading No Photos or Only Stock Images
How common: Found in approximately 57% of audited profiles.
Businesses with photos receive 42% more direction requests and 35% more website clicks than those without — per Google's own data. Yet more than half of Nigerian GMB profiles have either no photos, only one or two low-quality images, or obvious stock photos that don't represent the real business.
Google can detect stock imagery and rates profiles with original content higher. Customers see through stock photos immediately and trust them less than real images of your actual business.
The fix: Upload a minimum of 20 original photos across all GBP photo categories. Shoot with your phone if necessary — good lighting and a clean, organised space matter more than camera quality. Add 2–4 new photos every two weeks to maintain freshness signals. See our full GMB photo strategy guide.
Mistake 7: Not Responding to Reviews
How common: Found in approximately 69% of audited profiles.
Every unanswered review — positive or negative — is a missed opportunity. Responding to reviews is a direct engagement signal to Google's algorithm and a powerful trust signal for prospective customers reading your listing.
An unanswered negative review tells every future customer that you either don't care or aren't paying attention. A professionally handled negative review often does more for customer trust than a string of unacknowledged five-star reviews.
The fix: Respond to every review within 48 hours. Use your review responses as additional keyword-rich public content — reference your service, your location, and invite the customer back. Set up Google Business Profile app notifications so you're alerted the moment a new review arrives.
Mistake 8: Inconsistent NAP Across the Internet
How common: Found in approximately 79% of audited profiles.
NAP inconsistency — different versions of your business Name, Address, and Phone across directories and websites — is one of the most pervasive and damaging local SEO problems in Nigeria. It erodes Google's confidence in your listing identity and directly suppresses your Maps ranking.
It happens gradually: a phone number change here, an old directory listing there, different abbreviation formats across submissions. Over time, the accumulated inconsistencies undermine your citation authority.
The fix: Create a canonical NAP document with the single definitive version of your business name, address, and phone (in international format: +234XXXXXXXXXX). Audit your top 20 directories against this canonical version and correct all inconsistencies. See our full guide on NAP consistency for Nigerian businesses.
Mistake 9: Ignoring the Q&A Section
How common: Found in approximately 91% of audited profiles.
The Q&A section of your Google Business Profile allows anyone — customers or members of the public — to post questions that are publicly visible on your listing. Most Nigerian business owners don't know this section exists, let alone monitor it.
The result: customer questions go unanswered for weeks or months, or worse — they get answered incorrectly by well-meaning strangers. An unmonitored Q&A section is a live, public customer service problem waiting to happen.
The fix: Log in to your GBP dashboard weekly and check the Q&A section for new questions. Proactively seed the section with 5–10 common customer questions and keyword-rich answers so that it's populated with useful, accurate information from the start.
Mistake 10: Managing GBP with a Personal Gmail Account
How common: Found in approximately 55% of audited profiles.
When a staff member, freelancer, or agency sets up your GMB listing using their personal Gmail account, your business's most important local marketing asset is tied to someone else's personal login. When that person leaves, changes careers, or becomes uncontactable, access to your GBP — and everything built on it — becomes vulnerable.
This is one of the most common and avoidable crisis scenarios we encounter with Nigerian businesses. A restaurant owner calls us unable to update their hours because the employee who set up GBP three years ago no longer works there and isn't responding to messages.
The fix: Use a business Google account (ideally hosted on your own domain: info@yourbusiness.com) to own your GBP. Add 2–3 trusted team members as additional managers via the GBP dashboard. Never rely on a single point of access for any critical business asset.

Which of these 10 mistakes is the most damaging for a Lagos business?
It depends on your starting position, but in our experience, having no review generation system combined with an empty business description causes the most cumulative damage. Reviews are a primary ranking factor and the single most powerful trust signal for new customers. A business with a great product but no reviews is invisible and unconvincing on Google Maps simultaneously.
How quickly will my ranking improve after fixing these mistakes?
Some fixes produce results within days — correcting your category, for example, can shift rankings within 3–7 days. Others, like building a review base from zero, take 60–90 days to produce significant ranking movement. Plan for 30–90 days of consistent improvement after addressing the full list.
Can fixing these mistakes alone get me into the Lagos Local 3-Pack?
In less competitive markets and niches, yes — addressing these 10 mistakes puts you ahead of the majority of your competitors and can be sufficient for 3-Pack entry. In highly competitive Lagos markets (restaurants in Lekki, salons in VI), fixing mistakes is the necessary foundation, and additional optimisation work — local link building, ongoing content, aggressive review generation — is needed to reach and maintain the top three positions.
